What I do when my large art doesn’t pay the bills?
Now I know why artists paint smalls…
For The Artist
They take less time!
Less space needed for studio space and storage,
less investment,
and varnishing is so much easier! They travel well, and they sell 👍
For The Collector
They’re affordable!
There is less risk,
there’s room in the pocketbook and the wall for more art, and
they make great gifts.
Expect O.V.E.
I don’t have time to waste
I make changes quick.
As the saying goes, if you want something different, you need to do something different.
SMALL
Some Artists, such as my friend, Lisa Rogers, paint small art as their objective, desire, plan…. whathaveyou….
That’s not why I paint smalls.
MEDIUM
This size art is where I started because it was affordable and manageable, while still large enough for me to express myself. These 16×20’s & 18×24’s are like a sketchbook to me ~ I could paint them all day as warmups…
I would need a rotation of about 6 to keep my brain satisfied.
LARGE
This is where my heart is.
I like to paint using motion in my entire body ~ I like to move my arms wide and high, and I like to dance ~ to step back a few feet to look ~ and then come in close again to make my marks.
It feels physical while painting and I feel a physical-ness when I stand in front of a piece that is the size of me ~ and vibrates.

I pay my dues
It’s sacrifice season ~ I get it!
I’m paying my dues ~ and I will continue to pay my dues. No surprises, no complaints there.
But if I don’t sell more art, then I can’t paint more art!
I’m getting by with painting smalls. They’re OK. They’re productive and satisfying…. but I really want to paint more Large Art.
So I started a decor line a year ago …
Fine Art floorcloths, table runners & placemats wooo!! lots of big canvas pieces, I love it!! It’s helping me continue painting big art, while also diversifying my offerings to reach more people.
