An expressive Contemporary Landscape Painting
A Place I Love is an original contemporary landscape painting. It is 14×11″ acrylic mixed media painting that I created during my Artist in Residency program at The Art Center in Dover, New Hampshire.
This work is part of the residency body of work, Attending To Light. Throughout the residency, I explored how light is received, noticed, and reflected through intuitive painting. The paintings developed through attention rather than control, allowing color, marks, and composition to reveal light gradually and with intention.
The composition allows the viewer to pause and reflect. Trees lean inward with a sense of shelter while the water opens a path that draws the eye forward. The structure creates lift without urgency and invites the viewer to remain present within the scene.
Mark-Making, composition, and artistic choices lift mood
Marks build the place. Layered brushwork and mixed media forms the deep woods, the water, and the sense of standing inside a living landscape. The palette remains limited, so the colors stay connected and calm. The blues of sky and water rise like a cross, while greens hold the earth, adding a groundedness. Warm passages move through the darker areas, creating depth without breaking the harmony of the painting.
I mix pearl into the blue of the sky and water, so the surface responds to light. As the viewer moves, the painting shifts slightly. As the sun rises and sets, the place and time adjust ever so subtly. It feels like the moment something ordinary becomes luminous, when discovery and awareness lift mood.
Like the larger residency body of work, complexity is balanced here. The painting offers familiarity while also inviting discovery. Marks and color bring the viewer into a present moment where imagination can wander and explore.
This painting reflects the spirit of Attending To Light. The work develops through openness, attention, and trust in the painting process. What is discovered is then shared. You will feel that, and so will your guests.
