What Are The Steps In a New Art Commission

A Custom Art Commission Begins with Conversation

A custom art commission begins with conversation.

We might discuss space ~ the light in the room, the architecture, the atmosphere, the colors. Or we may begin somewhere more personal ~ a feeling, a milestone, a desire to live with something meaningful and original.

My process is collaborative and intuitive. I listen and gather direction.

We will cover all of the basics during the consultation; including size, materials, timelines, framing, and process

Each new work develops through adjustment, and trust in the process itself.

I welcome and encourage you to share photographs, dimensions, color palettes, inspiration images, or favorite paintings of mine as a starting point.

We will discuss scale, which begins at 24×18โ€, and substrate options; which include canvas, panel, linen, and other archival surfaces.

The Art Commission Process

The Art Commission Begins with an Initial Consultation

Every art commission process begins with a complimentary initial consultation.

In this initial consultation we discuss your space, goals, materials, scale, atmosphere, and any practical considerations for the work. You might arrive with detailed plans and inspiration images, or you might simply let the process unfold.

We may discuss:

  • Room photographs
  • Dimensions
  • Color palettes
  • Architectural details
  • Existing furnishings
  • Framing preferences
  • Emotional atmosphere
  • Placement and lighting

Following the consultation, I prepare a formal proposal.

Proposal & Deposit

The proposal includes:

  • Recommended dimensions
  • Substrate and materials
  • Additional options, such as framing
  • Estimated timeline
  • Pricing based on current comparable works

Once we agree upon the final proposal, a 50% deposit will secure the commission.

Painting Process

The painting process moves intuitively, so there may be several weeks of thought, preparation, and even more communication, before I make the first marks. Communication remains open between us ~ I respond, listen, and respond again ~ to the client and to the painting.

I may create two paintings for an art commission at or below 30×30โ€, which provides an option for you to select a painting that resonates strongly.

Collectors may also receive photographs and videos from the studio, which I share freely as part of the painting process experience.

Finished Artwork and Delivery

I share the finished artwork for final approval, before shipping or delivery.
From proposal to finished artwork and delivery, the commission timeline is 1โ€“3 months. This timeline depends on scale, materials, drying time, and process.

Options of framing assistance, installation guidance, or design support, added after the proposal, may extend delivery time. Once the options and artwork are finished and the balance is paid, the delivery process will begin.

If a completed work ultimately does not feel right for the space, before or after delivery, and does not have an appropriate resolution, your paid funds will be applied toward another current, or future, available work.

What I Enjoy Most About Art Commissions

One of the things I enjoy most about art commissions is the energy and inspiration it adds to my work.

I enjoy the conversations we have throughout the process. I enjoy learning how you want the painting to feel, what imagery you are drawn to, and what inspires your space. The collaborative process connects me with you in a special way, which reflects in the painting and ultimately in me, personally.

Some commissions I create for new homes, while others mark transitions, celebrations, or other meaningful moments. Some are gifts, and some I create alongside interior designers and architects.

No matter where the process begins, my goal is always the same ~ to create a painting that feels personal and edifies the people and space that surround it.

Art Commission Inquiry

Thank you for your interest in a commissioned painting.

To begin the conversation, please share any details you feel would be helpful:

  • Desired dimensions or approximate scale
  • Location of the work
  • Residential, commercial, or designer project
  • Preferred materials or framing ideas
  • Room photographs or inspiration images
  • Desired atmosphere, palette, or feeling
  • Timeline or installation goals
  • Favorite existing paintings of mine

You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out. Often the clearest direction develops through conversation.

Commercial Projects, Interior Designers, Art Consultants

I welcome commercial projects, and enjoy collaborating with interior designers, art advisors, and consultants for custom projects.

Commissions may respond to:

  • Architectural rhythm
  • Material palettes
  • Natural light
  • Emotional atmosphere
  • Scale and sightlines
  • Existing collections or furnishings
  • Existing collections or furnishings

Whether the artwork is for a private residence, community gathering space, office, hospitality project, or large-scale installation, my goal remains the same ~ I want to create artwork that feels connected to the life of the space and the people in it.

Trade collaborations and projects involving multiple coordinated artworks for a single space or collection are welcomed upon inquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

These frequently asked questions are just a guide for general information.

How long does a commission take?

Most commissions are completed within 1โ€“3 months depending on scale, materials, drying time, and process.

Are sketches or drafts provided?

No. My process is intuitive and develops through response and layering rather than fixed preliminary drawings. However, sketches may be part of the creative process, and may be shared.

What surfaces are available?

Commissions may be created on paper, canvas, panel, linen, or other archival substrates discussed during consultation.
