Description
In The Air is a 24×20 atmospheric abstract painting on canvas panel created during my Artist in Residency program at The Art Center in Dover, New Hampshire.
This painting belongs within the residency body of work Attending To Light, where I explored light as something that emerges rather than something simply placed on top of form. The painting developed through intuition, layering, and response with a focus on color, mark-making, and form to reveal the presence of light.
Atmospheric Abstract Painting Exploring Light and Motion
In this atmospheric abstract painting, deep blues and blue-greens create a quiet, immersive field. These cooler hues establish a sense of calm while allowing lighter passages to appear luminous.
A thin wash of hue combined with pearl was applied across the arc forms. This is not sparkle or surface shine, but creates a gentle glow that interacts with the surrounding light in the room.
In brighter daylight, the arcs appear as soft pale forms moving through the atmosphere. As the light shifts to night, the surrounding colors recede into deeper shadow. When this happens, the arcs remain visible longer, gradually appearing to glow as darkness quiets around them.
Because of this shift, the painting changes subtly throughout the day. In lower light the composition reveals a second presence, almost like a new painting emerging from within the first. The experience is interactive, as you and your guests begin to notice how the painting responds to the environment rather than remaining visually static.
Atmospheric Abstract Painting Creating Movement and Balance
Two sweeping arcs move through the composition like currents traveling through open air. One rises from the lower left and gently pulls the eye upward, suggesting lift and expansion. The second arc curves across the upper portion of the painting and bends the viewer’s attention back into the image rather than allowing it to exit the frame.
This creates a circulating visual path that keeps the viewer engaged as the eye moves through the painting slowly, discovering relationships between the arcs, the atmospheric field, and the layered textures beneath the surface.
Subtle cellular textures appear across the painting in rhythmic clusters. These repeating forms echo the arc patterns while quietly activating the surrounding space. The textures create atmosphere and depth without competing with the larger movement of the composition.
Movement and stillness exist together, as a darker vertical passage near the center anchors the painting and provides stability. The painting offers motion while also offering rest.
The palette remains quiet. The arcs provide motion. The textures create atmosphere. The values create depth. Together these elements create a painting that feels expansive yet grounded.
In The Air holds presence in a room without dominating it. Instead, it contributes calm light and thoughtful movement to the surrounding space. Over time, the shifting glow and quiet structure of the composition allow the painting to become part of the atmosphere of the room itself, supporting reflection, conversation, and gathering.
