Contemporary Landscape Painting ~ Days Like These
Days Like These is a 20×24″ contemporary landscape painting of mixed media on canvas panel created during my Artist in Residency program at The Art Center in Dover, New Hampshire.
This painting belongs within the residency body of work Attending To Light, where intuitive non-representational abstractions and representational works developed together as companions. The abstractions explore light as source and movement while the representational works reflect how that light appears in daily life.
Contemporary Landscape Painting of Atmosphere and Place
In this contemporary landscape painting, a narrow way leads quietly through a field of red flowering shrubs toward a dense green horizon of trees.
I invite you forward visually into the painting. The eye travels slowly through passages of color, discovering space gradually as the landscape unfolds.
Hue leads the composition. Deep greens establish the grounded presence of the land while saturated reds move across the surface like bursts of life.
Above and within this color is a cool blue passageway that can be interpreted as waterway, or path, leading toward sky. The water and sky blues were mixed with pearl and applied using a paint shaper. This technique creates subtle surface variation that becomes visible in lower light. Rather than producing sparkle or shine, these passages hold a quiet glow that emerges slowly as the surrounding colors deepen.
Contemporary Landscape Painting Exploring Light
Throughout the residency, I explored light as something that exists beyond simple shadow and highlight.
Because of this approach, the painting developed through layering, response, and revision. Color and form gradually revealed the atmosphere of the scene rather than describing it directly.
The darker passages create places of rest and depth, and the brighter reds gather energy to feel alive.
The contemporary landscape painting changes gently throughout the day as the surrounding light shifts.
The result is a landscape that invites the viewer to pause, enter, and experience a moment of quiet presence within nature.
Although Days Like These is part of the Attending To Light residency body of work, the painting now lives in the artist’s private collection and is not available for purchase.
