The artist decides

Examples of Diptychs

What might look like a diptych, and be called a diptych,
but it could be 1 painting cut in half 😲

my diptych

This is a beautiful example of an original Melissa Lea diptych painting

Each half of the diptych is itself a beautiful painting, and together they complete as another whole painting, with its own focal point, composition, harmonizing, etc..

A true diptych

my non-diptych

No, this is not a true diptych
this painting was cut in half!

I painted this as 1 painting, and then later decided to cut it in half to make it appear to be a diptych. Why do this? Read below!

Although not a true diptych, I call it a diptych because I am selling this as 1 painting.

the final exam of diptychs

Yes! This is a diptych

Although it is 1 piece, and will most likely be cut in half before it is finished. It was painted as 2 separate paintings, each able to stand on their own with focal point, composition, color harmony, etc…

Connection

why cut a perfectly good painting in half?

Well, it’s not to pretend that it’s a diptych! …at least not in my case. I cut the painting to add another layer of abstraction, with intent to involve the owner in the creation process.

Should the 2 pieces be in 1 frame? in 2 frames? How should they be separated or displayed? There is a layer of involvement that connects me with the viewer. There is action.

a closer look at the details in these diptychs

Not a diptych. Fire & Ice are 2 separate paintings that look good together because they were painted at the same time.

Yes, a diptych. Nutritious & Delicious were painted together intentionally to stay together, but could be sold separately as they are each a complete painting. But I choose to create a new piece of art, a diptych, 2 pieces sold together as 1.

Not a true Melissa Lea diptych, but selling together as a diptych. I cut this 24×18″ abstract floral painting after I painted it, to allow for additional creative expression in the framing and display stages.

the self challenge

Why do I love to paint diptychs?

Diptychs add a layer of abstraction to my already abstract paintings.

The style compounds and demonstrates my playful spirit, and the whimsy I experience in all things.

  • 2 abstract paintings next to each other that are painted to be one image of grays covering a colorful potential

Each painting is an individual, and together they are 1 ~ in this case they are able to hang in various ways and still “work”.

It was a trick question

If you’ve made it this far, you must be wondering what my favorite diptych is?

It’s not a diptych at all ~ it’s a triptych! 😁

I painted these 3 pieces, intentionally for them together to be a whole painting, but each individually and with it’s neighbor, are also complete paintings. This is arches watercolor paper with lots of soft pastels in the mixed media. It was a thrill, a challenge, and a painting with intention.

This style of painting (diptychs, triptychs) adds a layer of self challenge that I really enjoy, but it’s not my norm ~ my motus operandum is to paint intuitively, not to put too many guardrails in my process.
