An Original Contemporary Abstract Painting
Ohhh is an original contemporary abstract painting of acrylic mixed media on 11 x 14 inch canvas. Conceived in 2021 during my first year as a painter and thoughtfully completed in 2023, it marks the beginning of a visual language that continues throughout my work.
Ohhh Documents the Emergence of Ideas
Ohhh is more than an early painting; it documents the emergence of ideas that have remained central to my practice.
The repeated O forms are not simply motifs. The soft round forms become structure, rhythm, texture, and memory. Some are painted transparently, while others are physically embedded into the surface. As light moves across the painting, those raised forms reveal themselves, giving the work another layer of experience.
Rather than revising its history away, I chose to acknowledge it. The updated marks preserve the original energy while reflecting the confidence that developed two years later.

Qualities That Define My Paintings
Looking back, many of the qualities that define my paintings today were already present.
Translucent layers of color build depth through accumulation rather than description. Rounded structures add a softness and create rhythm across the surface. Floral language becomes a vehicle for abstraction instead of a literal subject. Drawing moves freely across painted passages, allowing intuition to guide each decision. Familiar forms remain recognizable while gradually dissolving into abstraction. There is a sense of freedom and a sense of playfulness.
Those characteristics continue throughout my body of work, making Ohhh an important origin point within my practice.
Color Through Relationship
Even at this early stage, I was thinking less about individual colors than about how colors behave together.
Olive greens move beside aquas. Dusty lavenders meet warm peaches and soft corals. Bright yellows appear selectively, creating moments of illumination rather than dominating the palette. Temperature shifts continuously across the surface, allowing the painting to feel luminous and alive. There is a freshness in the translucent white.
Because the colors respond to one another instead of existing independently, the composition changes as the eye moves from one passage to the next.
The Original Contemporary Abstract Drifts Between Abstraction and Still Life
At first glance, the painting appears filled with circles and gestures. Gradually, a vase and stems emerge. It drifts between abstraction and still life.
The still life never fully resolves. Recognizable forms dissolve into layers of color, drawing, and repeated marks, allowing abstraction to carry much of the painting’s emotional presence.
The black linear drawing is direct and unapologetic. Those marks are fearless. They provide structure without becoming illustration, allowing the painting to remain open while confidently guiding the eye.
A Work of Beginnings
Ohhh represents the beginning of a conversation that continues throughout my work today. It preserves the curiosity of discovery while revealing the foundations of an artistic language that has continued to develop through years of painting.
