Painted Intuitively Through Luminous Layers
Joleen is a 58×38″ large expressive floral painting of acrylic mixed media on canvas. I painted it intuitively through color, gesture, and layered mark-making. The painting gradually revealed the imagined forms of a crystal vase holding wildflowers atop an antique mahogany bureau.
Part abstract floral painting and part atmospheric figurative presence, Joleen arrived through movement, softness, feminine form, and the emotional warmth of luminous layered abstraction.
I painted it face-to-face, flat on the wall in 2023. After I finished painting it, I had it professionally stretched for the custom gallery-wrapped infinity-view sides.
A Large Expressive Floral Painting Like Wind and Wildflowers
Within Joleen, sweeping gestures and looping marks move across the upper field like wind, wildflowers, memory, or hair in shake-it-out motion. The colors overlap and dissolve, causing it to feel alive and continually shifting.
The crystal vase emerged intuitively, as my process is to paint from imagination, not reference or plan. Its softened translucent shape gradually became a grounding presence beneath the energetic movement above. The vessel quietly echoes the human body through swelling curves and softened contours, introducing a subtle figurative quality without becoming literal.
The title came only after the painting resolved itself, as a tip of my hat to Dolly Parton’s song.
Specifically, these lyrics:
“Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of auburn hair
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green
Your smile is like a breath of spring
Your voice is soft like summer rain

The Large Expressive Floral Painting ~ Balances
This large expressive floral painting balances energetic movement with emotional softness. The upper portion of the canvas is dense with layered arcs, scratches, loops, translucent veils, and gestural brushwork. And the lower half slows into atmospheric passages and reflective darkness of the table surface.
The composition invites the eye to wander continuously through color and gesture. There is rhythm and continuity across the surface, as areas of translucency allow light to move through the painting.

Up close, layered scratches, translucent passages, overlapping marks, and softened gestures reveal themselves slowly over time.
