June is a contemporary large colorful abstract painting and the capstone of Fresh Air, my 2026 series centered on renewed energy, abundance, and light that is felt as much as seen.
At 56×36″, June is the largest painting in the series. At first it was pinned to my painting wall, where I painted it unstretched. Later, I had it professionally stretched for crisp infinity-view sides and a gallery-wrap finish.
I paint intuitively from imagination without a reference. This allows my familiar floral language to appear and then disappear again. Ultimately, I created an atmosphere of optimism and wonder using color, mark, and form.

This contemporary large colorful abstract painting comes from my lifelong attraction to extraordinary color and miracles of the natural world.
I love the refraction inside gemstones, the shifting colors of an aurora, gardens budding in Spring, and the brief visit with a rainbow. I am fascinated by how much creation there is to experience in our everyday.
I’m not painting those things literally. What interests me is the feeling they create ~ wonder, beauty, abundance, and the realization that the world contains so much more than we can ever know.
That feeling is at the heart of June.
Luminosity Through Relationships
In June, luminosity comes from relationships between colors rather than traditional sunlight, shadow, and highlight.
Transparent and opaque passages move against one another. Chromatic darks allow lighter color to become more luminous. Warm color remains active beneath cooler passages, while temperature shifts occur even within the same color families.
The brightest color is only one part of the experience. Much of the light comes from what has been layered, partially buried, revealed again, or placed beside something different in temperature, value, or opacity.
This is the kind of light I continue to pursue in my work ~ light that appears to originate from within the painting.
Color and Structure in a Contemporary Large Colorful Abstract Painting
A contemporary large colorful abstract painting can contain an abundance of color without depending on color alone to hold it together.
Large, medium, and small shapes give June its underlying structure. Broad areas establish the composition, darker masses provide weight, and smaller areas of light move the eye through the painting. Beneath the color is a tonal structure that keeps all of that activity balanced.
The marks change in scale as well. Broad brushed passages and translucent layers are interrupted by gestural lines, broken color, scraping, scratches, and smaller drawn marks.
That variety matters because the painting changes depending on where you stand.
From Across the Room to Up Close
At this scale, June offers more than one experience.
From across the room, the painting reads through large areas of color, light, dark, and movement. As you come closer, smaller discoveries begin to appear ~ a line partly covered by later paint, a shift between transparent and opaque color, a scraped passage, or a small mark that disappears again when you step back.
I want both experiences.
Large scale allows the painting to have presence in a room, while the surface gives someone a reason to come closer and continue looking.
June ~ A Contemporary Large Colorful Abstract Painting from Fresh Air
June is the capstone of Fresh Air, the body of work I painted in Spring 2026. After moving from my home state of NH to Maine, and then completing a 4-month residency program which culminated in an exhibition, I began painting in my new home studio.
This period was a time of freedom from obligations, expectations and deadlines. With Spring springing at my open door, I felt renewal, optimism and expectant hope. I was excited about the confidence I gained during my residency and the new direction my art appeared to be taking.
Fresh Air is a series of 10 works, on paper and on canvas. They are colorful, atmospheric, and bold in their presentation. For me, June is both the completion of Fresh Air and an important marker of the increasingly non-representational direction my work is taking.

Large works are typically shipped rolled, with their stretcher bars included for re-stretching upon arrival.
