Contemporary Abstract Light Painting ~ Nothing Compares To You
Nothing Compares To You is a 20 x 24″ contemporary abstract light painting of mixed media on canvas panel that I created during my residency at The Art Center in Dover, New Hampshire.
Pearl paint mixes ever so lightly with hue to move across the surface in marks that suggest water and subtle atmospheric motion. These passages catch light gently as you shift position, or as light adjusts in the room. In contrast, the central field contains stronger reflective pigments that gather energy through the heart of the composition.
These luminous touches were placed with intention. Their presence invites you to interact with the painting. As natural light moves across the surface, the reflective pigments respond, which encourages you to remain present, explore, and feel a sense of discovery and recognition.
Through this interaction a quiet relationship begins to form ~ one shaped by curiosity and awe. These are the emotions many people experience when encountering beauty and the wonder of creation.
Attending To Light
Attending To Light is a body of work that explores abstraction of the presence of light ~ as an offering, and as a source ~ as something visible, and something understood.
Within the residency body of work, many of the non-representational abstract paintings developed alongside companion bouquet paintings. These works often informed one another as they unfolded. This painting emerged differently as it was not guided by a bouquet. The color choices and marks are my outward expression of an inner understanding.
As a result, the deep greens, burnt oranges, gold, peach and shadowed teal, which are all colors that appear frequently in the natural world, are attending to light. They are skillfully presenting moments of transition, such as sunset through trees, light across water, and forest reflections.
The composition suggests familiar representation while remaining fully abstract.
The compositional strength of this contemporary abstract light painting
I gathered light slightly off center that echoes downward through the darker passages below. Your eye moves from the center glow downward through reflection and then back upward into atmosphere.
This structure creates both movement and stillness. The painting holds an atmosphere that invites you inward while allowing space for pause and contemplation.
Within this balance of depth and radiance, the work creates a sense of strength by engaging with the eternal wisdom of nature.
