Description
Luminous Abstract Painting ~ Of The Earth And Worlds Unseen
Of The Earth And Worlds Unseen is a 24×20″ luminous abstract painting created with acrylic on canvas panel during my Artist in Residency program at The Art Center in Dover, New Hampshire.
This luminous abstract painting belongs within the residency body of work Attending To Light, where non-representational abstractions and bouquet paintings developed together as companions.
Luminous Abstract Painting Built Through Layered Light
In this luminous abstract painting, light doesn’t merely sit only on the surface, it emerges through layered color.
The glow develops through the interaction of transparent yellow, green shifts, neutral passages that hint of reflective copper, and surrounding dark earthen veils.
Because of this layered structure, the light feels embedded within the painting rather than applied to it. The painting appears illuminated from within.
Deep passages of shadow provide places of rest and contemplation, while brighter areas appear like openings, where light gathers and expands.
Compositional Gravity and Courage
There is a strong gravitational pull toward the center where a luminous core gathers attention. Because of this structure, the painting breathes outward while still holding together as unified.
Vibrant reds move across the surface with courage without overwhelming the composition. The reds are broken with texture, interrupted by darker passages, and balanced by cooler blues and greens.
As a result, the red feels alive and active, and reads as life force rather than decoration.
Surface Energy in a Luminous Abstract Painting
This luminous abstract painting carries physical vitality through the use of a palette knife. These marks create shifts in texture and edges that move between thick passages of paint and more atmospheric layers.
The moments of movement that exist beside areas of quiet depth helps to create surface energy.
Discovery Within the Luminous Abstract Painting
Subtle stencil motifs appear in the distance of the composition. These elements sit quietly behind color, remain understated, and feel almost like whispers.
These distant patterns give the painting a sense of history and memory that suggests something older and deeper rests within the layers.
A hint of copper appears within the lighter passages. At first this is barely noticeable, but with attention and shifting light, this begin to connect and reflect light.
Between Earth and the Unseen lies its true power
This luminous abstract painting ultimately sits between two worlds.
Earth appears through mossy greens, soil browns, and organic textures that ground the composition. All the while, a glowing center with distant patterns and atmospheric blues, directs toward something less tangible.
Because of this duality, the painting’s true power reads as both grounded and spiritual. It suggests an order of life energy moving through matter. Not chaos, not decoration or landscape, but a field where light force moves through living color.
It displays earth and unseen worlds through growth, emergence, life force, transformation, expansion, and grounding.
