Description
Non-Representational Abstract Painting ~ Rise and Shine
Rise and Shine is a 14×11″ non-representational abstract painting on canvas panel created during my Artist in Residency program at The Art Center in Dover, New Hampshire.
This painting belongs within the residency body of work, Attending To Light, where I explored light as something interior ~ something that emerges from within rather than simply reflecting from the outside.
Because of this approach, the paintings developed through intuition, layering, and response. Color, mark-making, and surface texture slowly revealed the presence of light.
Rise and Shine suggests the moment when light begins to appear as soft luminous forms gather and move across the surface in a quiet rhythm. Some feel as if they are rising. Others seem to drift and settle into place.
As a result, the painting holds a sense of gentle movement and awakening.
Non-Representational Abstract Painting Exploring Light
In this non-representational abstract painting, layered blues and greens create a deep atmospheric field. These cooler passages allow the brighter forms to glow against the surface.
Meanwhile, soft white and warm yellow shapes appear like small lanterns or stones catching light. Their placement creates a flowing path that moves diagonally across the composition.
Because of this arrangement, the viewer’s eye travels naturally through the painting. The forms feel connected, almost like a quiet procession of light.
Subtle linear marks and textured passages remain visible beneath the color and record the process of discovery that unfolded.
Non-Representational Abstract Painting with Quiet Energy
Rise and Shine carries a calm yet hopeful energy. The composition feels grounded by darker areas of color, while the lighter forms bring a sense of lift and openness.
Though this is non-representational, the painting reflects a familiar human experience of life with each day beginning quietly and life evolves.
This balance between depth and illumination allows the painting to feel contemplative while also feeling alive with energy.
