Description
Luminous Abstract Painting ~ Seek To Discover
Seek To Discover is a 24×20″ luminous abstract painting of mixed media on canvas panel created during my Artist in Residency program at The Art Center in Dover, New Hampshire.
This painting belongs within the residency body of work Attending To Light, where I created intuitive non-representational abstractions and bouquet paintings together as companions. The bouquets express how that light appears in daily life, while the non-representational abstract reflect the source and movement of that light before it becomes recognizable form.
Because of this relationship, the abstractions feel expansive and atmospheric and oftentimes luminous, as is Seek To Discover.
Exploring Source and Movement
A sweeping diagonal passage moves across the canvas like a current of energy traveling through space. As the eye follows this movement, the color gathers strength toward the upper right. Here layers of magenta, emerald, teal, and deep shadow form a vibrant center of activity.
Meanwhile, soft veils of color create an open atmosphere around the movement. Within these veils, delicate marks appear and move with a quiet rhythm. Some marks feel like pulses traveling through the surface.
With time and attention, traces of asemic writing begin to emerge. These marks do not form readable language. Instead, they suggest thought, memory, or presence moving beneath the surface of the painting.
Small passages of copper appear along the diagonal movement. As the light in the room shifts, these reflective marks reveal themselves and then recede again. Because of this interaction, the painting changes subtly throughout the day.
Together, the copper flashes and the subtle marks create moments of discovery. These moments feel like small rewards for attention ~ similar to the sparks of recognition that appear during understanding.
As a result, the painting encourages a resting pause. What first appears atmospheric gradually reveals layers of movement, mark-making, and light.
Luminous Abstract Painting Invites Curiosity
Seek To Discover reflects and invites curiosity, which guided much of the residency. The luminous abstract painting suggests a trust that something will reveal itself along the way.
The work carries a feeling of exploration and quiet anticipation. Areas of openness invite the viewer to wander through the atmosphere. Meanwhile, the concentrated passage of marks offers discovery and connection.
The painting becomes a space where movement, light, and curiosity meet ~ a place where something new may appear if you remain attentive.
