Description
She Talks to Angels is a 24×20″ non-representational abstract painting on canvas panel created during my Artist in Residency program at The Art Center in Dover, New Hampshire.
This painting belongs within the residency body of work Attending To Light, where I pursued light through non-representational and bouquet paintings. These developed together as companions. with the bouquets reflecting the way light gathers and appears in everyday life, and the non-representational works reflecting the source of that light.
Composition and Hue
She Talks To Angels uses a central vertical form within the composition. This form rises through layers of blue, green, and luminous yellow, and suggests a figure or a vessel. The form remains atmospheric rather than literal, so you may sense presence without being directed toward a single interpretation.
Hue leads the structure of the painting with deep blues and cool greens to establish an immersive atmosphere. A subtle pearl mix within the marks that travel across the surface reflect light and give the painting a sense of lift and quiet motion. Yellow mixed subtly with pearl adds a presence to that center light that extends its reach.
The painting continues to change with shifting light in the room, becoming almost physical as it encourages interaction and participation.
Non-Representational Abstract Painting with Dual Reading
As the eye moves through the composition, the vertical movement becomes more apparent. The lower passages feel grounded and dense. Above them, marks soften and open as the form rises.
When viewed from a distance, the non-representational abstract painting can resemble a figure standing with a raised arm, or wings unfolding toward light. At other moments, the composition appears closer to an abstract bouquet emerging from atmosphere. This dual reading reflects the relationship between abstraction and offering that developed throughout the residency.
What can be a vessel with atmospheric bouquet, others might see as a strong vertical opening to a horizontal, cross intersection. Light ascends and descends, and then spreads outward, which creates a balance, an emotional grounding, and a contemplative focus.
She Talks to Angels holds both grounding and ascent within the same space, and its non-representational abstract style offers many visual and contemplative interpretations.
