Contemporary Abstract Diptych in a waterfront home

There is a time and a place that most people want to avoid ~ that space somewhere in between.

Sometimes itโ€™s the beginning of a big project, or the surprise of a challenging life event ~ when things feel uncertain and unknown.

Itโ€™s the space in between the before and the after ~ that middle space.

This is where the work is.
Where we exercise virtue.
Where character is built.

When we move toward something ~ a goal, a challenge, a calling ~ we often expect clarity to come quickly. We want resolution, direction, confirmation that we are on the right path.

But what unfolds is rarely immediate.

Instead, time and action begin to shape us. We show up, we respond, we adjust. Even when the outcome isnโ€™t visible, we continue.

And somewhere in that process, is when something shifts.

This diptych, Somewhere In Between Something Arrives, lives inside that shift.

One piece holds the searching ~ the layering, the movement that doesnโ€™t yet resolve. Marks appear, disappear, and re-emerge. Lines wander and settle. Color builds slowly, without announcing what it will become.

Its companion carries a different energy. Not a conclusion, but a presence. Something begins to take shape. There is a sense of arrival, not as an endpoint, but as a recognition. The atmosphere opens. Clarity emerges. The mood lifts and moves toward resolution.

Balance Arrives

There is also a balance happening here ~ between high energy and stillness, gesture and openness, movement and pause.

The gestural marks are moments of free flow, and response. They hold the energy of making, of thinking, of not knowing but moving forward anyway.

Alongside that energy are thoughtful choices ~ to restrain, to soften, to leave space.

That restraint allows the paintings to feel optimistic.

The don’t overwhelm or demand a single interpretation. Instead, they open a space where different personalities can approach the work in their own way.

Some may see movement, some may feel calm, and some may recognize themselves somewhere in between.

Somewhere In Between is the Evidence of Life

I am known for painting light from within.

Not the light of sun and shadow, but light that is discovered through attention, action, and trust.

The diptych was built with this light through a language of color and marks.

Dark green and black anchor the painting, while warm ochre softens with a sense of comfort and optimism. White opens toward hope, and aqua holds a lightness that feels like peace.

Stabilo woodies, Caran dโ€™Ache crayons, graphite pencil ~ each one moving across the surface with energy and urgency. At times they feel almost out of control ~ chaotic, alive, responsive.

These are not decorative gestures. They are evidence.

Evidence ~ of trust, of seeking ~ evidence of life.

Somewhere In Between, Something Arrives framed diptych in a sunny room over a sofa.

As in life, what matters most is not what has passed, and not what is ahead, but what is happening now.

Somewhere in between, something arrives.

Somewhere In Between Something Arrives is a contemporary, expressive, non-representational abstract diptych painting. Each piece measures 24 ร— 18 inches and is created in acrylic and mixed media on Strathmore 400 series paper. Designed to live together or as companion works.
